Bhartiya Lok Kala Museum is one of the most famous museums of Udaipur

It  exhibiting the brilliant collection of folk articles of Rajasthan. This rare compilation varies from typical rural-dresses, ornaments, puppets, masks, dolls, folk musical instruments, folk deities and paintings.
Bhartiya lok Kala mandal was founded by Padma Shri devi lal samar in 1952. The main objective of the Institute is to conduct studies on the folk art, songs and festivals of regions like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh etc and to revive a vanishing folk culture. The institute has a puppet unit that trains children, teachers and other artists in the art of puppetry, as this is a very powerful non-conventional educative medium. It also boasts of regular performances that are a feast to behold. A group of 25 artists go on tour, both within India and abroad with a repertoire of puppet-shows and various folk dances. Their performances have brought the Institute a number of honours on a national and international level.

The exciting and colorful folk performances in the museum is one of the main reasons why Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal is one of the most popular museums in Udaipur.  The daily puppet shows (performed regularly throughout the day), which run for about 15 minutes, are interesting and very well-performed.  It is not surprising that it is very much admired among children. Rajasthan is the birth place of Indian puppetry.  Rajasthani puppeteers are known as Nats.  They will travel from village to village to perform their puppet show and a puppet troupe typically comprise 2 male puppeteers and one female drummer who narrates for the show. Mewar region of Rajasthan is known for its rich art and culture. Actually, the local handicrafts and things of art of this region have always been cherished all over the world. With the intention to maintain this rich tradition, Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal took the initiative, to start an institution, to encourage the local arts and crafts of Mewar. Bhartiya Lok Kala Museum is a part of their program that displays the best art and craft of Mewar.
