One of the most popular tourist attraction of Jaipur is “Jawahar Kala Kendra”, popularly known as JKK among the Jaipurites, is a go-to place located in the Heart of Pink City at Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg.

Highlights of Jawahar Kala Kendra

The theatre was designed back in 1986 by MIT graduate architect Mr. Charles Correa. This place is well known for its famous architecture and is its design concept. The building is designed in such a way that it represents 9 grids of our solar system. What makes visitors speechless about the place is the artwork done on the walls and ceilings of the Jawahar Kala Kendra.

The place is not limited to its magnificent architecture but has a lot more to offer for theatre lovers, art lovers, shopaholics and foodies. From Rajasthani cuisines to meeting artists from different genres, from bone china exhibitions to silk and cotton clothes from around the country,  this place has got something for everyone.

JKK has 2 food points, “Shilpgram” –It is located on the right side of the main entrance. It gives you the experience of ethnic villages of Rajasthan. It has 10-15 artificial huts, each representing art of a particular region of Rajasthan. Thus one can easily experience the true Rajasthan at just one place. Dining Hall of Shilpgram is semi-square in the ground and has traditional “Chowki’ system of sitting. They serve Royal Rajasthani cuisine “Dal- Baati – Choorma” thali consisting of two types of “Baati” – Plain and Masala Baati sunk in pure ‘Desi Ghee” , Dal ( Pulses) , Kadhi , Besani Mirchi ( Green chilli pickle) , and two types of “Choorma” –Wheat and Besani which is a true identity of Rajasthan. Not only the food but its low and affordable prices amaze visitors as a meal for one person costs hardly more than 300 bucks.Indian coffee House

Coming to the next food joint out there, “Indian Coffee House”. Unlike Shilpgram, Indian coffee households a different place in the heart of the youngsters. Not only because of its food, people spend hours here eating, chatting and enjoying. This place has no time limit and one can spend as many hours as he wants to come to the food menu, It serves the various types of coffee, snacks and south Indian meals. Indian coffee house has inbuilt table chair sitting system and the place is mostly liked by youth because of its pocket-friendly prices.

Theatres in Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK)

The theatre is a reflection of society and refines and reforms the society. Jawahar Kala Kendra has been able to live up to its expectations and provides an ideal platform for scholars, students and artists to blend their creativity and learn in turn from each other. It has 3 well-designed theatres, 1 open and 2 closed theatres for the young artists to practice and perform. Jawahar Kala Kendra has an open theatre, located in the middle of the premises. This place allows emerging artists and actors to rehearse and showcase their acting and dancing skills. Around stage surrounded by beautiful green grass and has the capacity to accommodate around 400 people at one time.JKK

Moving on to the other two theatres, Rangayan and Krishnayan”.  

Rangayan – All modern plays are screened in this regular closed theatre.

Krishnayan – All Intimate performances are done in Krishnayan making JKK unique in the sense that this is the only theatre in Jaipur which has dedicated theatres for distinct kind of performances. Artists from all over the country come here to participate in various types of the festival hosted by tourism of Rajasthan and Jawahar Kala Kendra committee.

Jkk is not only about food and theatre, It has Rajasthan’s one of the most popular art gallery and museum –“ The Alankar Museum”.  The art gallery stands for the Concrete and elusive inheritance of Rajasthan. It has 6 exhibition Galleries that are currently being considered as the art exhibition spaces. A number of artists of global status have displayed their unique Creations here. For the artists , the art centre has been a marker as a public playground for budding and displaying innovative work from cornet to corner of the arts.

The citation section ( audio – visual and library areas ) of JKK has latest and huge assortment of publications on fine arts, music that pulls art connoisseurs and scholars as well as theatre.

“Shopping is always a great Idea” – Absolutely right. Exhibitions in JKK offers a wide range of clothing from Jaipuri prints to Banarasi sarees, south Indian silk and what not. These exhibitions are not only limited to the clothing line, craftsmen from across the country come here to sell their states handmade crafts. Blue pottery of Rajasthan can be purchased from here. Best time to visit  Jawahar Kala Kendra exhibitions in September to December.
