Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls School – Jaisalmer

Rajasthan is known for its rich and varied heritage. It is known for vibrant Leheriya and Bandhini textiles, handcrafted Kundan jewelry, Handmade Jaipuri Jutties, and the list goes on and on. India is developing at a very fast rate, but there is one issue that can’t seem to be changing any sooner i.e. Women Literacy Rate in Rajasthan.

Rajasthan, being the largest state of India, has the worst women literacy rate at 53%, and shockingly it is 35% in rural areas. Recently a non-profitable organization’s founder and executive director, artist Michael Daube, visit Jaisalmer and found an instant need to do something for the betterment of girls’ education in that area. He decided to bring the two most important sectors-Textile and Education together through CITTA.

CITTA with the help of The Rajkumari Ratnavati School has decided to provide education and training to girls of Jaisalmer who fell below the poverty line. The school will provide education and training to approximately 400+ girl students from kindergarten to class 10. The school will provide facilities like a computer center, bus facility, library, and mid-day meal to lessen the financial burden of families.

Designed by the New York-based artist Diana Kellogg the school is a marvel to look at. According to the Diana Kellogg Architects team, “the oval forms were employed to reflect the curvilinear shapes of the local forts and also universal symbols of female strength.”

The initiative is to provide education to girls along with teaching weaving and embroidery techniques to other women by local artisans from Jaisalmer. This initiative also focuses on conserving the art which is on the verge of being forgotten.

An interesting fact which attracts people’s attention is the school’s uniforms. India’s most renowned artist and celebrity fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has designed the school’s uniform using Ajrakh. It is a unique form of powerful Block Printing. It will help the students to understand and learn about our culture and local heritage more precisely.

Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls School is the perfect example of bringing social cause and innovation together. It is very heartwarming to see how these people selflessly help women and girls to learn and achieve their ambitions which will eventually leads to Women Empowerment.
