Shrinathji – The Shrine in Nathdwara

One of the top religious shrines of Shrinathji (a widely worshipped form of Lord Krishna) has a lot of significance in Marwari and Gujarati culture. The temple is very old and situated in the middle of the town & amid all the shops. The mismanagement of the crowd is left in the hands of God inside the temple.

The temple unrolls at 5:30 am and a lot of devotees will assemble there, chanting ‘Shri Krishna sharanam mamah’. Once the door opens everyone runs together and one could have no hope of getting darshan but at one point in time you can get a chance to see Srinathjii wearing a beautiful cloth on His shoulder and strands of pearls. This is a satisfying sight and you will come out with a satisfied soul.

Way to the temple & After you reach :

You need to walk through the rows of shops selling pooja items, bangles, knick-knacks, sweetmeats, etc and you can ask people the way to the temple gate.

You will reach a gate which is called Moti Mahal where devotees are waiting to enter. You can see many people there who looked like priests and if you want you would like to ask them if they could arrange darshan and they will ask you for money, don’t get tricked.

Go to the entrance door where you will find a huge crowd where the men and women were sent in alternatively.

And this is the time you will get a glimpse of Sri Nathji with His captivating Eyes.  This time you are taken inside a little close to the Deity and able to see Krishna holding His little Finger high up and well dressed in a series of necklaces of varied sizes. You can give attention to the nose ring and remember about ‘Naasagre Navamouthikam’.

‘O, Shri Krishna! Kasturi tilak is adorned on your head. The resplendent Kaustubh Mani is on your chest. You are wearing a beautiful pearl in your nose. You have a flute in your hand and a bracelet in your wrist. O, Hari! There is fragrant sandalwood all over your body and the beautiful throat is decorated with free speech. You are the liberation provider of serving Gopis. Oh God! You are beautiful. ‘

You will get only  15 min for darshan then men holding long cloths will hit you softly to make you move out and make way for the devotees who are following you.  As you will come out you will see two men pulling vigorously at the Pankha, they were offering fan services for Krishna.

Then followed by crowds you will reach the adjoining room where you will see Baby Krishna in a cradle surrounded by golden and silver toys like peacocks, cows, rattles, etc. This Lord is called Navanita Priya.

Being tired of the jostling crowds you can sit near the Prasada stall and chanted Krishna slokas and Bajans.

You can also make some offerings there and can bring a Prasad ladoo from the Prasada stall. And if you look around you will notice many devotees carrying cut fruits, rose petals, and sweets.

Now you can move towards the main gate and as you make your way inside there will be many musicians playing on different instruments and several colored turbans and musical instruments. You can rest there for some time and then move.

The very famous Prashad of ShriNathji at Nathdwara temple that everyone must try is Sagar which is like sugar dipped in pure ghee.
